Busy Week in K2!

We had quite the busy week here in K2! In ELA we talked about the World of Bugs.  Our essential question was what kind of bugs do you know about?  Our vocabulary words were curious, observe, attaches, process, and slender.  We reviewed the letters Mm, Aa, Ss, Tt and Pp and the sight words I, can, the, we, see, a, like.  We listened to the books "I Love Bugs" and "From Caterpillar to Butterfly." In Math we started Topic 3 titled "Numbers 6 to 10."  We will be reading, counting and writing those numbers.

We had a visit from Firefighter Rob.  He talked to the kindergarten students about fire safety rules such as Stop! Drop! Cover! and Roll! and what number to call in an emergency.  Miss Tetreault, a student teacher in K1, even got to dress up in Firefighter Rob's fire suit.

On Friday we had so much fun at the "Appleblossom the Possum" festivities.  First we saw an animal adventures show where we saw all different creatures such as a snake, skunk, alligator, chinchilla and a possum.  Students were able to touch some of the animals if they wanted to. It was fun learning all different things about the animals.

Then we went to the gym for all the fun Appleblossom themed games. And then in the classroom we made Possum headbands and watched a quick video about possums.   It certainly was a fun day!

Week in Review ~ September 10 - 14

We made it through our first full week of Kindergarten and boy were we busy! In ELA our essential question was "How is everyone special?" We talked about how we are all different but that makes each one of us special in our own way. We read the stories Animals in the Park: An ABC Book and The Ugly Duckling and we introduced the first sight word, I. We also learned the sound for 10 letters: p, b, t, d, f, v, s, z, k, and g. In learning centers we sorted letters and words, practiced writing our names with an uppercase at the beginning and the rest lowercase, wrote our first sentence and worked on many alphabet activities.

In Math we started Topic 1 titled numbers 0 to 5.  In this topic we will count, read and write the numbers 0 to 5.  We also introduced some number poems for numbers 1, 2 and 3 to help the K2ers remember how to form them correctly.  We will work on the poems for 4 and 5 next week.  Any number writing practice at home would be very helpful.

Be sure to check out our class Instagram page theworldofk2. If you have not sent in the paper with your instagram username, please do so.  I do not accept followers unless I know who they are. If you sent a request and I have not accepted it, please let me know.

Monday night, from 5:30 - 7:30, is Open House at Johnny Appleseed. This is a great opportunity to have your child bring you to the classroom to see what we have been working on so far, as well as walk you around the school to see the various places they go during the week.  I hope to see you Monday night.

Thank you for the MANY donations to our classroom...it is greatly appreciated!

Panda Cam

This week in ELA we are reading an informational text (non-fiction) story called Panda Kindergarten. The K2ers learned some interesting panda facts such as the color of a panda bear when they are born. During center time and snack time I put up on our smart board a live panda cam from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The K2ers LOVED watching what the panda was doing so I thought I would share the link.

Here are some pictures from when I visited the National Zoo with my family in the summer of 2016.
