Week in Review ~ April 25th - April 29th

We had a great first week back from April vacation. I can't believe we are into the homestretch of the school year. The next 6 weeks are sure to be busy with assemblies, our field trip, field day and other exciting things so I am sure it is going to fly by!

This week in ELA we talked about being good citizens. Our vocabulary words were citizen, respect, tidy, necessary, and hauled. We listened to the stories "Hen Hears Gossip," "The Little Red Hen" and "Team Up to Clean Up." We discussed what we can do to help our Earth stay clean. Our sight words this week were has and play and we introduced the long i sound as in ride and kite. In learning centers we wrote about what we do that makes us good citizens, sorted pictures by the short and long i vowel sound, and read and spelled our sight words. Next week we will be talking about our natural resources and what new things we can make from things in nature.

In Math we started topic 10 titled "Compose and Decompose Numbers 11-19." This week we took the numbers 11-19 and learned that 11 is made with a group of 10 and one extra 1, 12 is a group,of 10 with two extra ones and so on...this starts their whole understanding of place value. I was so happy with how they grasped this new concept so easily. Next week we will be taking the numbers 11-19 and finding ways of decomposing them. Here is a great little song that reiterates what we discussed that I showed the K2ers in class.

Each day as we introduced some more of the teen numbers we sat and drew the base-ten blocks that represent that number. Ask your child if they remember how many tens and how many extra ones make up some of the teen numbers.

This week was the last week to turn in Books & Beyond sheets. The medal ceremony will be on June 1st. Parents are welcome to come see their child receive their medal. We have 10 K2ers that completed all 8 stations and will be receiving a medal that day...Great Job!

As we are winding down the school year we are in need of a few things to get us though until June. If you are able to donate any of the following items it would be greatly appreciated! Items in need: Dixie cups, Clorox wipes, and tissues (allergies seem to be in full swing in K2!)

Have a great weekend!

Baseball fun in honor of opening day for the Red Sox!

Today in math we had some baseball fun. The K2ers played a baseball version of one of their favorite games...Bump It. They also found the missing addend of 10 using baseball ten-frames and counters and played a fun game with paper baseballs and dice. Ask your child which was their favorite activity!

Week in Review ~ April 4th - 8th

This week in K2 our essential question for ELA was What do you see in the sky? Our vocabulary words were distance, recognize, space, challenge and surface. We read the stories " Bringing Down the Moon", "A View from the Moon" and "Day and Night." We talked about how the earth spins and rotates around the sun to give us day and night and the seasons. The K2ers were so intrigued when I demonstrated this with a globe and a foam orange ball as the sun. We reviewed the alphabet and the sight words introduced so far. Each child came home today with a NASA goody bag with some really neat space things. I included a note about how we were fortunate to get these cool materials thanks to my sister who works there. I hope your child enjoys showing you all the goodies!

In math we are finishing up Topic 9 where we are working on counting, reading and writing numbers to 20. Next week I will be taking each of the K2ers to do the end of topic assessment and the rest of the week we will be reviewing. Once we get back from April vacation we will begin Topic 10 titled Compose and Decompose Numbers 11-19.

Monday will be Red Sox Day in honor of the Red Sox Home Opener game. Your child is welcome to wear their favorite Red Sox or other Baseball shirt and hat.

Have a fabulous weekend!!

Report Cards

Report cards went home today with your child. Please look it over and sign the envelope on the Term 2 signature line on the front and send it back in your child's message tube. On the right side of the blog page I have added the list of the sight words introduced so far. As new ones are introduced I will add them. Please be sure to practice the sight words at home. Our hope by the end of the school year is that all K2ers will have mastered the kindergarten list. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
