Week in Review ~ January 26-30

What a crazy week with all the snow and 2 snow days! We started unit 5 week 3 in our ELA series which focuses on what types of foods are grown on a farm. We reviewed the letters Rr and Ff and sorted pictures by the initial sound. The sight words introduced were with/he. I can really tell that everyone has been practicing the sight words introduced at home. You will see on your child's report card a spot for Knows High Fequency Words. We are using a standards based report card this year so they want us looking to the end of the year's goal when assessing the students. At the end of kindergarten it is expected that students will fluently know 95% of all the sight words introduced. While most of the students did not have this standard mastered at this time (which they are not expected to be mastered in) I feel it is important to note that EVERY child in the class knew 100% of the sight words introduced at this time. I am beyond proud of every single K2er!

In Math we are starting to work on seeing the different ways we can make a number. Today we took the number 5 and listed all the different combinations that would make 5 when we break it into two parts. We will continue to do this with numbers to 10. Here is a picture of the chart we made together when figuring out the different combinations.

Today we had a special visit from Finz, the mascot from the Worcester Sharks. He and Mr. Goldstein from the Sharks organization were here to discuss how important it is to read. Here are some photos from their visit. Your child is coming home with a special reading program they have going on that students can participate in. Please check your child's message tube.

With the snowy weather here, please be sure to send in a change of shoes when your child wears snow boots to school. It can get warm in the classroom and wearing winter boots can sometimes cause them to feel even warmer. And as a reminder, this is especially important on Thursdays due to K2 having gym class where sneakers are required to participate in all of the activities.

So, I don't know about all of you but I am ready to put "Deflate Gate" behind us. So let's go Patriots...let's win Super Bowl XLIX!
Have a great weekend!

Week in Review ~ January 20-23

This week was another busy week in K2! We have been busy talking about the different types of things that grow. This week we talked about the different ways living things change as they grow. We read the story A Grand Old Tree, The Pine Tree, and From a Seed to a Tree. We discussed the vocabulary words amazing, enormous, content, imagine & develop. We also worked with the vowel Ee. Imam so proud of all the words the K2ers are spelling AND reading already. The sight word are was introduced. That brings us to 14 sight words that have been introduced so far. We still have 33 more sight words to learn so be sure to review them as they are introduced so that your child can be successful when recalling them.

In Math we finished our topic on subtraction. We will be doing the end of topic assessment next week and then we will begin Topic 9 titled "More Addition and Subtraction.

A fun craft we worked on was naming and labeling the parts of a flower. The class had so much fun with it. Here they are working hard with it.

As a reminder an address booklet was sent home on Thursday. Returning booklets with at least 7 addresses helps our school get "Time For Kids" (an educational magazine) for students at Johnny Appleseed. If you did not return the booklet today, please consider filling it in over the weekend and returning it to school next Monday or Tuesday!

Enjoy the snow that is expected over the weekend...I know I have two excited kids at home who aren't happy about the lack of snowfall this winter!
