And that's a wrap...

I have such mixed emotions as I sit here and write my last blog entry for the 2014-2015 school year. On one hand I am super excited for some time off to relax, go away on vacation, read books, and spend the next 8 1/2 weeks with my kids and husband. However; on the other hand, I am so sad to see this school year come to an end! When friends or family would ask me, throughout the year, how school was going or ask me how my class was I immediately had a smile on my face and that's because that is exactly what your children put on my face each and every day of the school year. I would joke with people and say that this year's class is much like Halley's Comet...in other words, it doesn't come around very often! The end of this school year marks my (cough, cough) 19th group of students, as a teacher, since I graduated college and I can honestly say that this class this year is one in a million. Don't get me wrong, I have had many other great classes and many, MaNy, MANY amazing students over these past 19 years, but there is just something about this class! They worked so well together, were kind, enjoyed being at school, respected one another, and LOVED to learn! I am so proud of each of their accomplishments and I look forward to seeing them in the hallways during the rest of their time at JA and watching them grow, as an observer. I hope you all have a wonderful summer and THANK YOU for raising an amazing group of children!

Panda Cams

This week in ELA we are talking about ways we can protect our environment. We listened to the story Panda Kindergarten. During our learning centers we put the Panda Cam from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. up on the promethean board to see what the Panda Bear there is doing. I promised the K2ers that I would share the web address on the blog so they could access it at home. I have also included the address for the San Diego Zoo's panda cam as well. Enjoy! http://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/webcams/giant-panda.cfm http://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/cams/panda-cam

Week in Review ~ June 1st - 5th

As the end of the year quickly approaches we definitely are not winding down in K2! We continue to be busy, busy, busy!

This week in ELA we finished up Unit 10 Week 2 where we talked about in which ways things are alike and in what ways are they different. Our vocabulary words for the week were sort, similar, perfect, endless and experiment. The category words we talked about were "opposites" so we brainstormed and listed over 25 pairs of opposite words. We listened to the stories All Kinds of Families, The Perfect Color, and Good For You. We also introduced the last two sight words that go,with our reading program come, does. There were 40 total sight words that we introduced in the program. This past week I assessed everyone on all 40 sight words as well as 7 other ones we learned throughout the year for a total of 47 words. I will be sending a sheet home soon where you can see how many and which ones they knew in February and then again in June. I was impressed with how well everyone did! Everyone has been doing a great job in reading groups reading various books. Be sure to help your child keep up all the reading over the summer.

Thank you to Mrs. Carlin for coming in to hang out with K2 for the morning this past Friday. The kids loved reading with her for a change I am sure!

In Math we continued on with Topic 17 titled Step Up to Grade 1. We talked about addends, sums, differences, and number sentences. We played games with addition and worked on turn around facts such as 1+3= 4 or 3+1=4 using two sets of colored cubes.

This week will be finishing up Topic 17 by working more on addition and subtraction and introducing more about Numbers Base Ten. (place value)

As a reminder this coming week, June 8th - June 12th, is Spirit Week at Johnny Appleseed School. This is a super FUN week where we can celebrate the amazing learning community we belong to. Here is a photo of each day's theme for your reference.

Color Wars ends spirit week on Friday. Kindergarten's color is purple. I know purple can be hard, especially for the boys, but as a hint most craft stores (Michael's, Joann Fabrics) sell colored t-shirts at a very inexpensive price. Be creative...We've seen colored hair, colored accessories (sun glasses, hair ribbons, party necklaces, Hawaiian leis, etc...) just as some suggestions.

Also, throughout Spirit Week, we will be taking part in penny wars. The class with the highest positive amount on Friday will be able to dunk Mrs. King in a dunk tank at the Color Wars assembly this year. Remember pennies and paper money (checks included) are positive points for your class, silver change is negative points. Let's see how much spare change K2 can bring in to go towards the work in our Outdoor Classroom!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend...it is a beautiful day!
