Week in Review ~ March 14th - 18th

It was another busy, busy, busy week in K2! In ELA we talked about animal habitats. We read the stories "Bear Snores On" and "Animal Homes." Our vocabulary words were habitat, wild, complain, join, and stubborn and we worked on the letters Xx and Vv. We also introduced two new sight words: said, want. In learning centers we sorted pictures by their initial sound, wrote about where different animals live and reviewed our sight words. We were very impressed with all the animal habitat projects that came in. The K2ers presented their animal habitat to the class. Dr. O'Hearn-Curran and Mrs. King even came down to see all of their hard work and explained their animal habitat to them. Here is an iMovie of the K2ers with their project.

In math we continued to decompose numbers up to 10. We also worked on figuring out one or two missing addends. Next week we will be finishing up Topic 8 and moving into Topic 9 titled Count Numbers to 20. Moving into Topic 9 also means we move into a new workbook. If anyone would like to help pull out the pages from 4 or 5 workbooks from the comfort of your own home, please let me know. All help is greatly appreciated!

This week we were also fortunate enough to have Mrs. Megowen come into our classroom on Wednesday to talk to the K2ers about Irish American step dancing. She showed them how to do an Irish jig and then let them try it.

Then on Friday Mrs. Megowen came back with some JA students (including two of our K2ers...great job, Ani and Molly!) to do a quick dance for us. Thank you Mrs. Megowen for taking time to see us! Here is a quick video of them.

Students came home Friday with a notice about World Down Syndrome Day which is Monday, March 21st. Our Developmental classrooms at JA are inviting students to pay $1.00 to wear as many socks as they can and the crazier or more mismatched the socks, the better! The money raised will go towards purchasing a new oven for their classroom. The students in the developmental classrooms run the JA cafe every week where they make and sell coffee and treats for teachers to purchase. JA will celebrate and spread awareness of Down Syndrome in honor of four of the developmental students with Down Syndrome. This day is also near and dear to my heart because my ADORABLE 3 year old nephew/godson, Evan, has Down Syndrome. He lives in Florida and I tell the K2ers about him often. Here is Evan practicing for World Down Syndrome Day by rocking his crazy socks. Could he be any cuter?!?!?!?!

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Looks like we may have dodged the spring winter storm as I write this but since we are New Englanders we know that can change before lunch! Wouldn't that be ironic though...a nearly snow-free winter and then a storm on the first day of Spring.

Week in Review ~ March 7th - 11th

I hope everyone had a great week...it was another busy one in K2! Today at morning meeting we realized that there are only 60 school days left until summer vacation!

This week in ELA we talked about how we take care of different animals. We also talked about what animals make good pets and which ones do not. Our vocabulary words were responsibility, train, depend, compared, and social. We worked on the letters Gg and Ww and introduced the sight words of and they. We listened to the story "The Birthday Pet", and "The Perfect Pet." In learning centers we wrote about what we need to do to take care of pets, sorted pictures by their initial sounds, looked around the room for words with Gg and Ww. Today the K2ers came home with the instructions for their animal habitat project. I look forward to seeing their finished products.

In math we continued working in Topic 8 focusing in on decomposing 6, 7, 8 and 9. Ask your child if they remember what it means to decompose numbers! We also worked a little bit on fluency with our math facts within 5. I hope that you have found the flash cards I sent home mid-week to be helpful.

Enjoy your weekend...looks like it is going to be a beautiful one. I know I am enjoying this beautiful spring weather. I hope you are as well!

The Week in Review ~ February 29th - March 4th

It was a Seussical week in K2 with lots and lots of reading!! On Read Across America day we met our "Book Buddies" for the first time from room 2B. Every other week we will be getting together with them for 30 minutes to read with them. The K2ers were super excited and can't wait until we get together again.

Then on Friday we were lucky to have TWO Mystery Readers come to K2. First we had a 3rd grade teacher from JA, Mrs. Smith, in to read to us in the morning. And then we had Mrs. Remillard from IC Federal Credit Union in to read to us in the afternoon. It was so nice to have visitors in to read stories to us.

In ELA this week we started unit 7 and are talking all about animals. This week we discussed how some animals are alike and how they are different. Our vocabulary words were appearance, behavior, exercise, wander and plenty. We read the story "Zoo Borns" and worked with the vowel Uu. We discussed and listed verbs and introduced the sight words for and have. We also started working on a project with a partner comparing a contrasting two different animals. The first step was to randomly choose an animal and draw and label it. Next the partners discussed how their animals were alike and how they were different. We will be continuing with this project in the next couple of weeks.

In math we started Topic 8 titled More Addition and Subtraction. We started the unit by finding different ways to take apart (decompose) 4 and 5. Next week we will be working on decomposing numbers to 10.

Here is one last photo from this weeks Seussical fun...

Have a wonderful weekend!!
