Our "Week in Review" ** 10/14 - 10/17

Starting this week I'd like to blog a "Week in Review" at the end of each week to keep you informed with what we are learning in the world of K2! What a busy week we've had so let's get started...

During ELA we learned all about our Five Senses and what we can learn from using our senses. We read the story Senses at the Seashore and listened to the read aloud "A Feast of the Senses." We also had 5 new vocabulary words: explore, senses, finished, kneads, and feast. We worked with the letter Ss and introduced the sight word see as well.

In Math we have been working on counting and writing the numbers six to ten and we are almost finished with topic 3. We continue to work on writing numbers without reversing them. Any practice you can squeeze in at home would be helpful. For the "Problem of the Day" I introduced the use of math journals because I was SO impressed when I had the K2ers go back to their seats to solve my problem on their own on scrap paper. I only put 8 pages in their journals so that they can bring it home in a few weeks to show you.

This week at Johnny Appleseed we started our School-wide Read Aloud of Kenny and the Dragon. I think reading chapter books to children at such a young age is a wonderful thing to do because it teaches the students to make the pictures in their heads and exposes them to some wonderful vocabulary. A while back a notice went home to explain how the students of JA could help "decorate" our school dragon. It is about half-way filled so if you would still like to donate $1.00 to help defray the cost for our Medieval Fair on October 29th please send it in with your child with a note explaining what it is for. JA has been transformed into medieval times...here's a look inside.

And lastly, we had a Bus Safety program. The students went out back behind the school and learned how to be safe waiting for a bus, getting on the bus, sitting on the bus and getting off the bus. Be sure to ask them if they remember what their important job is when they go over train tracks while riding on a school bus.

Next week we will be talking about Fire Safety and have some Leominster firefighters coming in to assist with that.

Have a great weekend!
