Our Week in Review ** September 8th-11th

Our second week in K2 was a success! I am so happy with how well the K2ers are adjusting to our routines. The video I posted was a quick glimpse of our day at school. I hope you enjoyed it! Here are some pictures from our first two weeks.

This week we started our reading series during our English Language Arts (ELA) block. Our essential question was "How is everyone special?" We read the stories Animals in the Park: An ABC Book and The Ugly Duckling. The letters p, b, t, d, f, v, k, and g were introduced. We are introducing the letters using Lively Letters. Ask you child to tell you the sound and movement for each letter. We also introduced the first sight word which was I. At Open House I gave everyone a set of our sight words. Please cut them out and practice them with your child.

In Math we started Topic 1 titled Numbers 0 to 5. We talked about how when counting a set of objects the last number we say is the total amount and that it doesn't matter which item is counted first, if each one is counted just once then we come up with the same amount. We also started practicing how to write the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Writing numbers can be frustrating for some students so please practice with them at home. I taught them poems to help remember how to write them so here are the ones we have done so far if you'd like to use them at home.

#1 straight line down, then your done. That's the way to make a 1!

#2 around and down and out with you, that's the way to make 2!

#3 around the tree, around the tree. That's the way to make a 3!

This week the students also went to the computer lab to take the MAP assessment. The MAP test assesses them in reading and math to better help me see what they already know and what they need help with.

If you have not sent in your child's "Student Information" sheet that I gave out at kindergarten orientation please be sure to send it to school in your child's message tube. Also, please help your child to memorize their pin # for the cafeteria. Even if money is sent in each day they need to input their pin # so that the cafeteria can keep track of all purchases made by each student.

Tuesday, September 15th is International Dot Day so try to send your child to school in some dots if you can!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
